We know that the next gen Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 will eventually come, I just didn't think it would happen for another 5 years. Now sources are saying that Microsoft is quietly planning to unveil it's Xbox 720 at E3 in 2013, which means Sony wont be to far behind with its PlayStation 4.
According to the website Develop "Multiple sources across the industry, from processor chip manufacturers to middleware firms, have told Develop they expect the console to be fully unveiled at E3 2013, months before its release. The collection of data points to a 2013 launch for the system across all main regions, though early 2014 remains a possibility." They are also saying the new Microsoft console could be called the Xbox Next, if that's true I think they should stick with the 720 marketing, after all Microsoft is already advertising it in the movie Real Steel, and that's what gamers are expecting. I guess it doesn't really matter what it's called as long as the gaming experience blows us away with unbelievable awesomeness.
Just to be clear... right now this is all just a rumor, but I think with the way technology is advancing today and at the speed it's being developed and released... this rumor could turn out to be true. This news comes shortly after rumors hit the net that Sony is developing games already for the PS4.
Here's a list of other developments that you might be interested in hearing as well.
- Develop understands that Lionhead is working on a project internally named Fable Next, which will launch on the new console.
- Epic Games’ new Unreal Engine would likely be available sooner than the 2014 date recently given by studio founder Tim Sweeney.
- One source still insists that an EA studio already has rudimentary Xbox console technology on desks. EA has flatly denied the claim.
Of course everyone is going to deny this is happening. They will deny it up until the day they actually officially announce it. That's just how the video game industry rolls. The fact of the matter is the time is coming when next gen consoles will invade our homes in all their glory.
