PROJECT DURANGO - More Details Emerge About the New Codenamed Xbox
Earlier this month, we let you know about the new hush project going on over a Microsoft headquarters. News broke out that the next XBox was going to be codenamed "Durango" and was already being worked on. The internet went crazy with this news & everyone started speculating on what this new XBox would include.
We have heard everything from LCD screens in the controllers, to the system being able to support 3D. But with all that said, we never really had confirmation if this "Durango" project was indeed true.
Well that all may change. Recently a technical designer for Crytek (the people behind the Crysis games), Sean Tracy, tweeted out something rather surprising. Something that I am sure he regrets as of now. (Especially since he has since deleted this tweet.)
Enjoying the Durango developers summit in London. So far, great swag and interesting talks.
There you have it! A designer for a very well know company confirming the project name and everything. What is even more striking is that they are having developer summits around the globe for this new XBox already.
GamesIndustry.biz digs a little deeper, and notices some very similar terminology in a lot of the leading game developers recent job postings.
Bethesda, Ready At Dawn, Rockstar North, Lionhead, Microsoft Studios, Creative Assembly, Kojima Productions and Infinity Ward are all apparently working on projects for new consoles.
"Are you ready to work on an exciting new AAA IP for a Next-Generation home console game system?" asked the God Of War: Chains of Olympus developer, while Kojima Productions ask for engineers for "next-gen game engine technology." RockStar North required someone with "the skill to get the most from next-gen consoles." The reference to next-gen was then quietly removed from the posting.
Bethesda recently recruited for programmers for "future-generation consoles," while Infinity Ward asked for animators with "an interest in working with next-generation technologies." Microsoft Studios was looking for people to join a team already at work "on a next-generation project."
So after hearing all of this, it's safe to assume that new XBox is definitely on the way. Will it be out this year, probably not. But Game Tyrant will be attending the E3 Expo this year, so we will surely report on it if something does drop.
Who knows if it will even be out next year. But one thing is for certain, XBox is definitely not going to let Sony release a new Playstation before it can release a new XBox.
What's the #1 feature you hope they include in the next XBox? I wouldn't mind a much better Kinect type of device, that works with all types of room sizes.
