Gearbox's Mikey Newman Trashes the Retake Mass Effect Movement

With the new Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut hitting soon, you would hope that all of this controversy about the game would die down once and for all. Well it hasn't, and rightfully so in this case.

When Official Playstion Magazine UK sat down with Gearbox's Mikey Newman to talk about the upcoming Aliens Colonial Marines game, he had a few choice words to say about the backlash that the Mass Effect developers received. When he was asked about the games canonical storyline of the Alien franchise, he went on to say:

“Don’t do the thing that makes people write petitions on the internet.”

“You have no right to petition people in art. God damn it. You don’t I don’t give a shit. That’s on me, that’s not Gearbox that’s totally me. You have no right to petition artists to change their art. You can not like it, you can not buy it, you can not enjoy it—that’s fine. Bitch all you want: you can not petition them.”

One would have to agree with what Newman has said here. You never see people petitioning bad movies, and even at times bad TV Shows. I mean really, how many bad Adam Sandler movies do we have to see? Have people petitioned for that to stop? No, they haven't. But yet they still go out to see them for the slim chance that one of them might actually turn out to be good. That same rule should be applied to games. This is an artist's piece of work. If you don't like it, so be it, that's on YOU.

To add even more fuel to this flame, that $80,000 or more that was raised to petiton for a new Mass Effect 3 ending and was supposed to go to the Child's Play charity, well they denied it. Yup, you read that correctly. Many people were confused about the whole movement, and thought their money was going directly to helping the game get a new ending.

Penny Arcade's Jerry Holkins (the ones behind the Child's Play charity) went on to say:

“We were dealing with a lot of very confused people, more every day, and that told us we had a problem…Apparently some of the people giving to the cause seemed to think that they were paying for a new ending to Mass Effect.”

“Child’s Play cannot be a tool to draw attention to a cause. Child’s Play must be the Cause.”

It's said that those who donated to this movement will be getting their money back, so let's all hope that happens. On top of that, let's hope those same people still donate to the Child's Play charity.

Are you officially done with all of this hoopla over the Mass Effect 3 ending?
