GAMESCOM '12: KILLZONE, TEARAWAY, and More From Sony's Press Conference
If you were at work or school and missed all of today's Playstation news, or you just want to find it all in one place then we have all right here. This is a summary of Sony's 2012 gamescom press conference, and again there is a ton of exciting news and announcements to cover. So without further ado - Let's begin shall we?
LittleBigPlanet PS Vita
The conference kicked into gear with a trailer for LittleBigPlanet PS Vita. The trailer highlights new ways to play with rear and front facing touch functionality, as well as tilt. You can also use the inbuilt camera to place your image as a photo in-game and edit it as desired, as well as the usual heap of customisation options that allow you to express your creative side. LittleBigPlanet 2 will get a new add-on to enable Cross-Controller play: PS Vita and your controller can both be used to play.
Graphics and animations look as smooth as you would expect from it's console counterparts, and this is sure to be a hit once its released on September 19th.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
Not only are we getting new character announcements today, but also news that all those who purchase the PlayStation 3 version of All-Stars Battle Royale through the PlayStation Network or retail will be able to download the Vita version free at no extra charge from the PlayStation Network. Now that's pretty cool! And certainly appreciated. Now you can try the cross-save and cross-play features for yourself without the need to fork out for another purchase.
New characters unveiled today are Ratchet and Clank with their iconic weapons, Spike from Ape Escape, Dante from Devil May Cry, and of course Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet. Check out the new trailer above.
PlayStation Plus, Vita and General Playstation News
As well as All-Stars, there are other games that will begin taking advantage of cross platform play, letting you download the Vita version at no extra charge. These two others are - Ratchet and Clank: QForce (also a Vita title now), and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.
A date for when you can download PSOne classics on the Vita has been stated - August 28th. We also got news that Red Dead Redemption will be September's game of the month for PlayStation Plus members, at no extra cost. You don't want to miss out on that one if you haven't played it already. And did you ever fill up on cloud saves? Well now you have a reason to be happy as PlayStation Plus cloud storage will be extended to 1GB from 150MB. Many of you will be glad to hear that PlayStation Plus will be coming to PS Vita from September.
If you just the cycle late and are after the PS3 must have games, then you'll be glad to know that PS3 Essentials are coming, offering the likes of Uncharted, inFAMOUS and LittleBigPlanet for around €19.99.
In other news, Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified will be available as part of a limited edition Wi-Fi PS Vita bundle. Other games that will come in bundles are Assassin's Creed: Liberation, LittleBigPlanet Vita and PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale.
Media Molecule's Special Announcement - Tearaway
Media Molecule walked on stage to surprise us with their next game for PlayStation Vita - Tearaway.
Tearaway is kind of like a buddy movie. It stars iota, a messenger from a paper dimension whose envelope head contains an urgent message to deliver… to you! It’s a very special message, and one that’s unique for each and every player. In order to read yours, you’ll need to take up the role of co-star and, together with iota, journey through the vibrant papery landscape – two buddies going on an epic adventure to deliver this important message.
The game looks beautiful, and has Media Molecule's trademark stylised presentation. Players will be able to manipulate the world using touch and gizmos, like creating a storm by gently blowing on device or poking your fingers through the back to move or destroy objects blocking the path.
Killzone: Mercenary
Guerrilla Games has announced Killzone: Mercenary, taking advantage of the PS Vita hardware to create one of the most visually impressive titles the platform has seen from the brief footage we saw. Amazingly it was built on the same engine as Killzone 3, but also utilizes Vita's touch capabilities for melee combat and more interesting gameplay possibilities. The campaign has you playing a mercenary meaning for the first time in the franchise you'll be fighting alongside both the ISA specialists as well as Helghast forces. Players will earn cash for completing missions and taking out the enemy, which can be used to spend on loadouts and equipment. The only date we have for release is 2013.
Puppeteer
Puppeteer is on its way to PlayStation 3 from Sony’s Japan Studios. Developer Gavin Moore explains it to us in this PlayStation Blog:
Puppeteer all takes place in a magical puppet theatre, owned and run by the slightly eccentric but thoroughly charming Professor Gregorious T. Oswald. His latest production is the weirdly titled “The Perilous Journey of a Boy Named Kutaro”.
On one dark, moonlit night, the star of the show, a young boy named Kutaro, is carried away by the maleficent Moon Bear King to a black castle where the unlucky lad is transformed into a puppet. Kutaro then displeases the terrible tyrant who duly devours the boy’s wooden head and casts away his body. But the headless hero is not alone, for he discovers a very special pair of magic scissors to help him on his harrowing quest to find his head, and his way home.
Unlike most games where you move through the world, the world of Puppeteer actually moves around you, with all the action taking place on the same stage. The sets are continually moving and changing, taking you on an adventure with surprises in every scene. It’s packed full of weird and wild situations that we think you’re going to love.
The game looks weird and wonderful, so I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing more about this one.
New Wonderbook Titles on the Way
We know of the Book of Spells (demonstrated at E3), but next up on the Wonderbook is Diggs Nightcrawler from Moonbot (an oscar winning studio). We were also told about two new partners working on Wonderbook projects. BBC Worldwide will be bringing us Walking with Dinosaurs, which is awesome by the way, but what is more awesome is that The Muppets and Toy Story will be coming from Disney! How cool does that sound?
The Last of Us - New Trailer
PlayStation Mobile
PlayStation Mobile is coming this Autumn, along with a flurry of titles including Aqua Kitty, Flick Hockey, Samurai Beatdown, Super Crate Box, Passing Time, and BeatSlider. Content will be provided for both big publishers and indie developers.
Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified
After a Call of Duty title was announced two years ago at E3, we finally get our first glimpse of Black Ops: Declassified. Set between the first and upcoming second game in the franchise, Declassified will feature exclusive and familiar multiplayer maps as well a campaign. It will take advantage of the rear touch pad, and looks pretty much like what you would expect. The visuals pale in comparison to what we seen in Killzone Mercenary, but otherwise it still has that classic fast paced gameplay that we've all come to know and love.
God of War Ascension
For the first time in the franchise, God of War Ascension is including co-operative and competitive multiplayer modes. Competitive will pit players against each other in 4v4 deathmatch, including classic and brutal finishing moves from the single player portion. It has been announced today that Playstation Plus members will be first to try their hands on the multiplayer beta soon, so keep an eye out for more details on exactly when.
Until Dawn
A new announcement from Supermassive Games - PlayStation Move enabled horror Until Dawn – let the game’s Executive Creative Director, Will Byles, tell you more:
On the anniversary of their friends’ disappearance, a group of classmates visit the site of the mystery to lay their ghosts to rest and get some closure. Little do they know, they’ll end up burying each other instead.
It’s teen horror so obviously it’s isolated, the power’s out and the phones don’t work! You’ll play through the story as multiple characters, sometimes with a friend and sometimes on your own, to discover who it is that’s intent on killing off you and your friends. It’s up to you how you play, so we don’t know how your story will go or who’ll be there with you at the end.
To play the game you’ll use the PS Move controller in a totally natural way. It’ll act as your torch, guiding your way through the darkness. Additionally, when you want to use an item, the controller will intuitively map your actions in the real world to those of your character’s hand in the game world.
Fifa 13
Fifa 13 will include Move support. You can paint a path for players to follow, allowing for a more tactical approach to gameplay.
What was the best piece of news or footage for the Playstation fans out there today?
